What are zygomatic implants and how are they placed?
Zygomatic implants are a specialised type of dental implant used when there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw to support traditional implants. They are typically recommended for patients with significant bone loss who may not be suitable for standard dental implant placement.
These implants are longer than conventional dental implants, usually measuring between 30 and 55 mm, and are made from biocompatible titanium. Rather than being anchored in the upper jawbone, zygomatic implants are secured into the zygomatic bone, commonly known as the cheekbone, which offers greater density and strength for implant support.
How zygomatic implants integrate with your bone?
Unlike traditional implants that are positioned vertically into the jawbone, zygomatic implants are inserted at a carefully planned angle. The implant is guided alongside the sinus cavity and anchored securely into the dense zygomatic bone, or cheekbone, which provides a strong and stable foundation even in cases of severe upper jaw bone loss.
Once placed, the titanium implant begins a biological process known as osseointegration, where the surrounding bone gradually grows and bonds to the implant surface. The high density of the cheekbone supports this process, allowing the implant to become firmly anchored over time. As integration progresses, the implant achieves long-term stability, creating a secure base for fixed teeth without the need for extensive bone grafting. Who is suitable for zygomatic implant treatment?
Zygomatic implants are an advanced treatment option for patients who need implant-supported teeth in the upper jaw but lack the bone volume required for conventional dental implants. Rather than being placed into the upper jawbone, these implants are anchored into the zygomatic bone, or cheekbone, which offers greater strength and stability for supporting fixed teeth.
This approach is often considered for patients who require extensive upper tooth replacement and have experienced significant bone loss over time. In these situations, the upper jaw may no longer provide adequate support for standard implant placement, making zygomatic implants a suitable alternative.
Zygomatic implants may also be appropriate for patients with loose or failing upper teeth, or for those currently wearing removable dentures who want a more secure, fixed solution. By using the dense cheekbone for support, this technique allows fixed teeth to be placed even in complex cases where traditional implant methods are not suitable.
